Family Care:

Savings and Investments...During Uncertain Times

Question: Amor (Manila), October 1, 2008

Answer:

Dear Amor,

Sa inyong tanong kung ano pang ibang paraang mag-impok na pwedeng pasukan, as a policy, our website does not endorse any specific product or investment instrument. Dahil dito, in your savings and investments, you may wish to:
1. Make sure your savings and educational plans are with strong and reputable banks and companies, who will honor their obligations and which have the resources and management to survive a bad world economy.

2. Do NOT invest in anything that you do not understand.

3. If you are renting and now have enough savings to afford a loan, or to buy, your own house, then this would be good since a house is not just an investment but also a base, a center for your family. But make this a joint decision with your spouse, at siguraduhin na kaya ninyo ang pag-bayad sa bahay. Of course, also choose a reliable developer to buy from. Fortunately, there are several good property developers now in the Philippines.

4. Continue to save a percentage of monthly income that you and your spouse have discussed and agreed to. Make sure you have funds available in case of family emergencies or sickness, or God forbid, na mawalaan trabaho kayong mag-asawa.

5. Keep these savings in US dollars, as you have done. It appears that the US dollar continues to strengthen against other currencies during this time, even if the problems began in the USA. Then, convert to pesos or other currencies what you, your spouse and family need to live on.

We have invited bankers to comment on your question, and will post their reply once we receive them. Congratulations on your good start at savings, first to ensure your children's education, and eventually your family's future.
